Godzilla's first weekend box office brought good news for the sequel, which will be directed by Gareth Edwards again. Edwards stepped down from the project in May 2016. The script was rewritten by Dougherty and Shields in October 2016. Dougherty was officially named director in January of 2017 and has been in the role ever since. In June 2017, filming started in Atlanta, Georgia, and concluded up in September of the same year. Yoshimitsu Banno, director of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, and original Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima, both of whom passed away in 2017, are honored in the film's dedication.

On May 31, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released in theaters to mixed reviews from reviewers, with acclaim for its visual effects, action scenes, cinematography, and musical soundtrack, but criticism for the storyline, pace, tone, and characters. With a global revenue of $386 million, the picture failed to live up to its production and marketing expenses of $170–200 million. March 24, 2021 saw the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which was a sequel to the first film.

Paleobiologist Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison, who work for the Titan-studying group Monarch five years after the existence of the "Titans" was made public, witness the hatching of a larva dubbed Mothra. This is done by employing the "Orca," gadget, which emits frequencies that entice or change Titan behavior. Emma and Madison are kidnapped by a squad of eco-terrorists commanded by former British Army Colonel Alan Jonah. Mothra escapes and pupates beneath a neighboring waterfall at the same time.

The Monarch squad lures Rodan to Monster Zero in Mexico. Godzilla then ambushes Monster Zero and sever his left head. During the battle, the US Navy fires a "Oxygen Destroyer," prototype weapon, killing Godzilla. Monster Zero regrows his missing head and wakes all other hibernating Titans, using Rodan as his slave. Madison therefore disowns Emma.

King Ghidorah is an ancient extraterrestrial that seeks to alter Earth, according to mythical writings. To contact Godzilla, Mothra exits from her cocoon and fly to Monarch's Bermuda headquarters. Finding Godzilla's hideout in a radioactive submarine. A nuclear weapon is used to speed up Godzilla's recovery. The warhead is manually detonated, resurrecting Godzilla and boosting his strength.

But despite this, Jonah continues on with the devastation of the earth that will be much worse than anything humanity can inflict. Madison hears this and takes the Orca as a result of her hearing. At Fenway Park, Madison accidentally draws the whole Titans team with her radio frequency broadcast. To eliminate the Orca, Ghidorah makes landfall in Boston. Godzilla, assisted by Monarch soldiers, comes to confront him in combat. After discovering that Godzilla's radiation levels are growing, Mark organizes a team to rescue Madison and flee the city. When Mothra comes to assist Godzilla, she is caught by Rodan, who she eventually defeats, but not before suffering injuries as a result of her fight.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson said in April 2015 that he wasn't sure if he'd be back for the sequel and that his return was up to Edwards. When Legendary said they were going to make a movie called Godzilla vs. Kong in October 2015, it was going to be out in 2020. Legendary is making a movie series called "Monarch," which "brings together Godzilla and King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new." This movie series is called "Monarch."

It wasn't only Edwards who believed Legendary needed to move on with things, but also indicated his desire to work on Godzilla again in the future.

It was announced in January 2017 that Dougherty has been formally named as director. First, Dougherty says, he was asked to direct the film before being asked to rewrite it. Dougherty's response to being approached to direct a film was as follows: "Is that correct?' In a flash, I reacted that way. As a result, I was overjoyed, and I'm still feeling that way now. It felt like a fairy tale come to life. With a lot of pressure. Great strain."

During shooting and post-production, Dougherty made several edits and revisions to the script. Writing the screenplay, he said, was a challenge since he had to balance "while still creating a story with human characters that we care about." with the monster spectacle. When Dougherty saw an opportunity to portray Monarch as a group of heroes in the previous film, he knew he had to make it the focus of the new one. This resulted in the film being a group effort.

In the original draft, Mark and Sam were initially written as longtime buddies. Later versions replaced Sam to Serizawa to help Mark. Dougherty incorporated the Oxygen Destroyer as a metaphor of "humanity's inability to not interfere." Dougherty and Shields opted to kill Godzilla in the film's middle since this has never been done before.

A new term for these beasts is introduced in the film: Titans. According to Dougherty, he intended the monsters' designs to exude an air of awe and reverence "In the eyes of primitive man, you want to give these animals the power to cause him to bend down before this deity... If it looks like a bunch of gigantic dinosaurs, it's not going to be good enough. That's taken care of by Jurassic Park These two things must be separate. In order for them to succeed, they must be themselves. They're titans." The director directed the designers to "distill those silhouettes and those key traits into something more modern." by looking at the original designs from every period. Rather of treating the Titans as mere "monsters," the filmmaker wanted them to be seen as "very large animals with a distinct thought process."

In his study of moths, Dougherty noticed that some of them seemed "scary" and "predatory" Mothra's goal was to create an insectoid, gigantic monster that appears convincing from every aspect, and particularly in motion, in order to preserve a feeling of reality. Because he didn't want Mothra to seem like a blown-up moth, the filmmaker thought him to be the most challenging Titan to design. Mothra was created by Legacy Effects.

Dougherty worked closely with Toho to ensure the new design respects previous renditions of King Ghidorah. The center head was the alpha, while the others were its lackeys. He researched animals, especially king cobras, to lend authenticity to the design. The designers were ordered to look at diverse scales from other reptiles to prevent having Ghidorah's scales appearing comparable to Godzilla or the real King Ghidorah.

On August 13, 2019, the movie was released on Digital HD. It was released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on August 27, 2019. The 4K version comes with HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision high dynamic range, and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, among other things. If you want to buy something from Best Buy, you can get a special steelbook with a 4K UHD Combo. On the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, it came in at number one. Domestically, the DVD made $12.6 million and Blu-ray made $23.5 million, for a total of $36.1 million in video sales.

Toho released numerous versions of the film on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD in Japan on December 18, 2019, which featured retail exclusives from Amazon, the Godzilla Store, and Tsutaya. Toho also issued a four-disc limited edition set which featured the 4K Blu-ray, ordinary Blu-ray, DVD, special features Blu-ray, and a S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla figure. The Godzilla Store exclusive of the four-disc collection contained a limited edition Movie Monster Series figurine of the film's rendition of Burning Godzilla. The store exclusives contained limited unique clear files. In January 2020, the film had its pay cable premiere on HBO.

Released May 31, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was made by Warner Bros. Pictures except in Japan, where it was made by Toho and distributed by them. It was made in IMAx, 3D and other formats. The movie was supposed to come out on June 8, 2018. Then, in May 2016, it was moved again, this time to March 22, 2019, and then again to the date it is now.

In early May 2019, people who wanted to see the movie before it came out could. On May 17, 2019, a VIP press screening was held in Los Angeles at the AMC Century City theater.

In 2014, the film begins in San Francisco. While Mark (Kyle Chandler) and Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) are still grieving the loss of their firstborn son Andrew, they are clinging to their newborn daughter Madison (Lexi Rabe). Look above and you'll see Godzilla himself someplace after the MUTOS fight.

Emma is now living with Madison while working as a paleobiologist for Monarch (now played by Millie Bobby Brown). Orca is a gadget that can generate frequencies for interacting with Titans, and she has been working on it for some time. For Madison's sake, Mark still attempts to keep in touch with them. Mothra's birth is seen by other scientists at an underground facility in China, which Emma and Madison visit later in the story.

At a Monarch senate session, Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe), Dr. Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins), and Dr. Sam Coleman (Thomas Middleditch) walk out as the senators demand that Monarch be incorporated into the U.S. government. They subsequently meet with Mark after discovering that Emma and Madison were seized by Jonah, as he intends to utilize the Orca for his own sinister goals.

The three take Mark with them to meet other Monarch workers, such as sonographer Dr. Rick Stanton (Bradley Whitford) and mythologist Dr. Ilene Chen (Ziyi Zhang), as well as G-Team head Colonel Diane Foster (Aisha Hinds) and Officer Jackson Barnes (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.). They warn Mark that many more Titans than Godzilla have been found, and while he advises killing them before they come out (he appears to blame Godzilla for Andrew’s death), Monarch refuses to allow that happen.

Godzilla has been confined, but he is now being released in order for him to begin to trust them. Godzilla and Monarch then swim for Antarctica.

Jonah takes Emma and Madison to a place where a huge creature called "Monster Zero" – King Ghidorah – is frozen in a block of ice. In the end, when Monarch and Jonah's teams meet, they set up the Orca to try and talk to him. Makes a move to save Emma and Madison, but when Madison starts walking toward him, Emma grabs a detonator. She wants to set off the explosives on the ice to free Ghidorah. She does this, and everyone runs to get it. Freed: The three-headed beast rises to the surface when he is freed.

Godzilla arrives not long after that to finish the job. With all three heads firing lightning bolts at Godzilla, Ghidorah sends him tumbling into the frozen water, while Godzilla is forced to retreat back beneath the ice. Afterwards, Ghidorah goes on the attack and kills many individuals, including Graham.

Monarch then contacts Emma, who is cheerfully helping Jonah rescue the Titans. And they may be able to restore some of the equilibrium that man has broken. Mark thinks she's doing it to avenge Andrew's death.

Jonah and Emma are on their way to Mexico with their crew to rescue a Titan. Evacuations begin throughout the city. To unleash Rodan, "the Fire Demon," they travel to an active volcano. In the midst of Monarch's squadron of fighter planes, he emerges. They're no match for the flying beast, which eats several of the pilots then barrel-rolls through the air to kill the others.

Ghidorah enters the fray shortly thereafter and engages Rodan in combat. Using his numerous heads, Ghidorah obtains the upper hand (or claw) in the fight against Rodan. Godzilla returns for a second series of attacks before he can proceed. Godzilla manages to rip Rodan's left head off in the rematch. A bomb nicknamed the "Oxygen Destroyer" is set to be launched by the military, which Captain William Stenz (David Straithairn) informs Monarch about. When the bomb goes off, Ghidorah manages to flee while Godzilla seems to be killed.

On the summit of the volcano, Ghidorah is able to regrow his head. Titans are roused from their slumber by his piercing scream. The Titans respond by wreaking havoc on their own territories, resulting in the deaths of many people. Ghidorah's reign is even accepted by Rodan, who recognizes Ghidorah as the Titans' alpha, and so submits to his authority as a result.

Mothra, who has been cocooned beneath a waterfall, emerges with luminous wings and flies for Godzilla, who is alive but weakened and healing underwater. Mothra and Godzilla are spotted by Monarch as they communicate with each other. Mothra and Godzilla "have a thing," as Barnes puts it, and the crew agrees with him. He was one of the Titans most feared and would confront Godzilla for power, according to Ilene's research from historical texts. "

Mark, Serizawa, Ilene, and Coleman proceed to Godzilla's location to try to awaken him, however it's revealed that Godzilla's recuperation procedure might take years. Seeing how Titans like Godzilla thrive on radiation, the scientists devise a nuclear cure. Because the sub's weapons systems are damaged, Serizawa decides to take the nuke down and set it off personally. He bids his comrades goodbye and makes his way up to Godzilla, his closest encounter. He kisses a barely cognizant Godzilla before committing himself and detonating the bomb. Big G reappears, stronger than ever, and launches his atomic breath into the sky.

That Ghidorah is guiding the Titans to bring further havoc is now apparent to Emma. Madison has called her mother a monster for it. Emma informs Jonah they can use the Orca to broadcast a frequency because Fenway Park and most of Boston have been evacuated, but Jonah ignores her. Madison steals the Orca and heads to Fenway Park, sending out the frequency that attracts the Titans. Ghidorah and Godzilla come, and they rampage over the city, as Madison flees.

After the credits, Jonah and his men pursue a guy who gives them one of Ghidorah's heads at Isla De Mara. To which Jonah responds that he will steal it for an unknown reason.

An anti-Godzilla bomb is fired by the military. However, Monarch is aware that a nuclear strike would expedite his recovery. Dr. Serizawa willingly sacrifices himself to help Godzilla return to the surface.

Godzilla is going to face Kong in the credits after finding a Mothra egg. But Jonah is handed Ghidorah's head to experiment with.
